Today, I got an email from Hacktoberfest’s team that I earned a badge for becoming level 2 as a contributor. It was astonishing that I could contribute more repositories this year than last. Okay, in this story, I would like to share about Hacktoberfest, how to join it, and which repos you could contribute this year. I think there is a significant update from the latest, which make this year seem difficult. For the writing method, I will use the classic technique 5W + 1H.

What is Hacktoberfest?

Many of you may be wondering what Hacktoberfest is and have some related questions. I will bring the answer from the deep source. Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open-source software by DigitalOcean that encourages participation in giving back to the open-source community. Developers get involved by completing pull requests, participating in events, and donating to open-source projects.

Who can join this event?

Well, the first hierarchy to joining it is someone who understands and can code as well, but everyone can and should join this event. This event is free, and the purpose is excellent, to help each other via an open-source project. If you think you are great at creating documentation, being a data scientist, or maintaining a project, you should join it.

Where to start?

To start, you only need to access the Hacktoberfest site — here. After that, click START HACKING or REGISTRATION NOW OPEN, and you will be asked to join via GitHub or GitLab.

How to contribute?

To make your progress counted, just like below, you should contribute to a repository with at least one tag of #hacktoberfest #hacktoberfest2022 or #hacktoberfest-accepted.

For example, the repo usually accepted in Hacktoberfest contains these tags. Not all must exist, but the chance will be high if all tags are included.

Which repository could I Contribute to?

FYI, this year, Hacktoberfest’s team significantly improved their work. This year, you can’t contribute by just adding your information, such as your account pictures, to a project. If you force to do that, your contribution will be noted as Excluded.

After a repository is excluded, all contributions will not be counted as progress in Hacktoberfest, so choose wisely and don’t give up on improving yourself this year. If you are struggling to find which repositories are accepted, look at this report; it has already been approved.

6. https://github.com/bandya2003/MaliciousActivity-

7. https://github.com/Ghost-Ashu/Back-To-Code

Number one is in mind, so if you make a pull request on that but have not yet responded, contact me here or via email.

When these events going to end?

Your contributions will be counted and calculated until the end of 31st October. If you still have no idea which contribution you will make, you can join a group that talks about these events or be a writer of knowledge, such as a computer science or related topic. Your write is a great start.

What will you get if you complete this events?

After completing this event, you will get two options; first, your contribution will be used to help to plant a tree, or you can use it to get SWAG. Everyone loves SWAG, but notice that only the first 55.000 participants could get SWAG. So, don’t hesitate; just start. The SWAG for this year contains this T-shirt. You can choose one.

Conclusion

After reading this, I hope you could also contribute to the Hacktoberfest events. It’s for everyone. No need to be perfect; contribute, but don’t spam. Because the quantity is fun, but the quality is key — Hacktoberfest. You can access more information about this event here. Finally, thanks for reading.
