Popularity

Popularity is often a tempting pursuit for many. In this modern era, such actions are supported by various platforms, from massive social media to enabling technologies. But is chasing fame inherently wrong?

Certainly not; fame is a choice in life. For those who don’t choose that path, life goes on regardless. Indeed, the allure of popularity is strong; who would refuse to be adored by many?

Yet, I — I prefer something different. People need not know me personally; if my actions or creations can inspire, that is more than enough for me.

Returning to popularity, everyone desires it, but only some understand it. I, myself, am not exceptionally knowledgeable about it. I know that popularity is a double-edged sword; it can either support or destroy someone.

For example, this year is 2024, and I still remember the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. There were three singers whom I often listened to. However, as time passed, their popularity faded. I do not obsess over such things, but I observe their declining influence.

Perhaps fifty years ago, someone would be remembered longer. Communication back then was slower than it is now. Nowadays, with social media support, one can create virality.

Of course, that can be beneficial within certain limits. But if everyone is only chasing after virality, what does life mean? Do they only seek fleeting fame? Have they considered that people also had similar thoughts thousands of years ago?

And what happens to them afterward? They are forgotten. My teacher, Marcus Aurelius, was right about that. In his time, many desired fame. But they are only remembered by their descendants. After that, they are forgotten.

Even if there is a server storing information, it’s not a guarantee of permanence. Servers can fill up, and everything can vanish. And at that moment, we will be forgotten.

My other teacher taught me that humans should be a blessing to the universe.

That is my reflection this afternoon.
